Four Concerns in Education

From the four (4) concerns in educations, make a reaction based on your experience citing at least one (1) situation in education set-up.

1. QUALITY AND EXCELLENCE
Quality of education is one of the major issue that the Philippine government should resolve but somehow it is recently improving. Few years ago, Philippine education has declined because of poor results from standard test conducted among elementary and secondary students, as well as tertiary level. The results were way below the target mean score. Factors that greatly affected the quality of education in our country were high drop-out rates, high number of repeaters, low passing grades, lack of particular language skills, failure to adequately respond and address the needs of people with special needs, overcrowded classrooms, and poor teacher performances. Because of this, quality of education in our country has been compromised. It is also very true in our school. As one of the low performing school in the Division of Pasig, these factors have greatly influence our school. The same factors were also affecting the overall performance of our school which results to low quality of education and poor performance of the students.

2. RELEVANCE AND RESPONSIVENESS
In this second concern of education, the main question that should be answer is, “Do you think you are responsive enough to the needs of your student?”
To ensure that we are responsive to the needs of our student, we should look at the relevance of the curriculum in their level. Teaching with pure knowledge maybe mind-boggling. We should also consider to teach beyond the curriculum like teaching students how to be a good citizen. They should be able to develop holistically.  We are not only teachers for them, but we are also their second parent. And as a parent, we should teach our child how to be morally right.

3. EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS
Let us first differentiate efficiency from effectiveness. To work efficiently means to work in less time. Meaning, if someone is efficient he is able to manage time and resources effectively. While on the other hand, to become effective is simply to do the right things. As a teacher these two things are very crucial when it comes to our teaching. Both should go hand in hands.
In this concern, we should also develop our work-facilitation. It is an important skill to make our work easy. When it comes to ICT Utilization, sometimes teacher’s technical know-how becomes a hindrance making the technology function well. Lack of knowledge in operating such is still true to our present situation right now. Since they do not know how to operate these technology, teachers became hesitant to use it.
To become both effective and efficient, there are some important skill that we should possess as a teacher. These are communication skills, leadership skills, human relation skills, and time and personal management skills. If you all have these skills, being effective and efficient would come naturally.

4. ACCESS AND EQUITY
There is a big discrepancy in educational success across social groups. Students from wealthy families have excellent educational background gained from exclusive private schools at the start of their education until they finish college. Unlike students from the less fortunate families, wherein most of them could not even finish elementary nor secondary level because of poverty. They could barely afford to buy school supplies, not even the tiny amount of fees from the public school.
